Boardgames on Kickstarter 2: We can fund it!

Betty the boardgame player
The month of February was a dry period for both baking and playing board games for me. I'm still looking for another recipe that could be a proper follow-up to the videogame inspired bonbons and random stuff keeps me from finishing putting down my thoughts on Flashpoint. From time to time I check Kickstarter for interesting stuff but since I'm trying to save money now, I don't fund much stuff. Well, except for HabitRPG and Dreamfall Chapters... Damn!

Anyway, I came across couple of current Kickstarter projects that piqued my interest. A lot of board games seem to get funded lately and I hope these three will get too. If I had to choose one, I'd go for Drum Roll with a heavy heart because the others seem fun as well. Still, Drum Roll might be a bit too similar in its gameplay to Dungeon Petz that I already own which makes me reconsider spending money on it. But at least there would be no shipping as I plan to attend Spiel 2013. Gah, decisions!

All these games seem to be on the right track to reach their goals, but I hope that my post will help them with some extra funds. If you have time and none of these games grabbed your attention, try finding something you might like among the other projects that are currently running :)

(Once again I declare that I am in no way related to Kickstarter or any of the projects... Yet, wink wink.)

Drum Roll: The Board Game

funding ends on 10th March, game delivered by October 2013 (or May for the promo items only)

Drum Roll is a worker placement game in which you become a manager of a travelling circus in the early 20th century and your task is to pull off three great shows that will earn you the most prestige from all the players. It won't be easy. You will have to hire various performers and backstage personnel, manage supplies, equipment and costumes, schedule rehearsals and prepare the best show possible.

Traditionally, as worker placement games go, you have a number of markers which you place on the main board to collect appropriate colored cubes (rehearsal time, equipment, promotion,...) which you then assign to your hired performers. The performers have three levels of their show, for the best possible act you need to supply them with right cubes - the time the performers need to prepare, appropriate costumes and equipment and other stuff that's needed. After several rounds, every player performs their show, earns prestige, pays the staff and the performers and prepares again.

The game has already been published in Europe two years ago but didn't get to the States. The current Kickstarter is for reprinting the game (and its expanisions) and publishing it in the US and Canada. The pledge that will get you the game starts at $40 and you can pick it up at Spiel 2013 in Essen (in October).

If it caught your attention, this is its Kickstarter page.

Odin's Ravens
funding ends on 5th March, game delivered by August 2013

Another game I picked is a second edition of an apparently well-known two player game. Odin's Ravens places two players in the roles of... Odin's ravens Huginn and Muninn as they race each other to fly around the world and return back to Odin to report what they saw. At the beginning of the game, the players lay down cards with different kinds of terrain in a row to symbolize the world. The players then play cards from their hands to move their ravens forward or use cards from an auxiliary deck to  rotate, add or move around the terrain cards on the table in various ways. First player to reach the finish line wins.

This being the second edition, the rules have been supposedly made clearer and simpler for new players and from the instruction video it's clear that the game is easy to pick up and play. I like the simple the card layout  but I'm not so sure if the game utilizes its theme enough. However, the internet agrees that the game is quite popular and the Kickstarter campaign will with no doubt reach its $15k level, so I guess there's no arguing with that :) You can get the game for $28 sans shipping outside the US.

Its Kickstarter page is right here.

EVIL INTENT
funding ends on 13th March, game delivered by July 2013

Everyone loves to play as the bad guy. There's nothing wrong in having your own world domination plan but making it happen might be too much for our capabilities. Fortunately there's Evil Intent, a game where you become an evil mastermind with a foolproof plan to seize the control over the planet.

Players each compete in making their plan happen before those of the others. At the beginning of the game, every player get a scheme card which says what is needed to make their plan happen. The players each also get a character card which shows what kind of a mastermind they are - a spy, a robot, a dictator, an evil bunny? - each character has certain perks which can come in handy during the game. As the rounds go, players hire new minions and henchmen, send spies to grab useful opportunity cards from around the world (the board) and try to thwart each other's plans with extra mischievous Thwart cards. First player to successfully complete the requirements on their scheme card and pull off the plan, be it opening the hell gate or releasing a band of ninja monkeys, wins the game.

This is actually the second run on KS for Evil Intent - the first one didn't reach its goal which has been halved this time around. Also some new rewards for various pledge levels were introduced to put a cherry on the top. The first pledge level with the game in it is at $45 (plus whooping $25 for shipping outside the US).

If you feel like taking over the world, pledge at Evil Intent's KS page.
